SEPTA Multi-Modal Power Substation Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Installation of a new multi-modal substation building, including: a new two-story building, retaining walls, rock removal, cable bridge, all services to the building, new ductbank system, substation equipment, rectifiers, transformers, and all other work to provide traction power to SEPTA's 3rd rail system at the 69th Street terminal and yard.

RAI's Transit Division performed all electrical work for this project to transform and rectify 13.2 KV power to 750 volt DC power to the SEPTA 3rd Rail System and power to the Norristown High Speed Line. The Transit Division also performed all electrical services for the two story substation building and ductbank system.

RAI scope included, but was not limited to:

  • Electrical permitting
  • Furnish, install, test and commission all new traction power equipment including rectifiers, rectifier/transformers, and monitoring equipment.
  • Furnish and install all conduit in ductbanks throughout the site, from the building to each connection point on the 3rd rail system.
  • Furnish, install and test new 13.2 KV to 480 Volt substation for building services.
  • Furnish and install secondary power distribution for the building.
  • Furnish, install, test and certify a fire alarm system.
  • Furnish and install all site lighting and lighting in the substation.
  • Furnish, install, connect and test all cable for the traction power to the Market Street Elevated, 69th Street Yard and the Norristown High
  • Speed Line.
  • Furnish, install, and test power ventilators in the anchorage including all controls.
